Chandigarh: Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday with senior police officers to review the ongoing anti-drug campaign, law and order situation, and internal security across the state ahead of Independence Day.

Top officials including Special DGPs Arpit Shukla, Praveen Kumar Sinha, and ADGPs heading Anti-Narcotics, Gangster, and Counter-Intelligence units attended the meeting.

A key focus was on strengthening the state-wide anti-drug campaign, ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’, launched on March 1, 2025. Since its launch, police have:

  • Registered 15,671 FIRs
  • Arrested 24,639 drug smugglers
  • Seized over 1,020 kg heroin, 330 kg opium, 21 tonnes poppy husk, and ₹12.25 crore in cash

DGP Yadav stressed a dual strategy of intense enforcement and community-led prevention to make Punjab drug-free.

Security for Independence Day celebrations was another priority. All field units have been placed on high alert. Officers were instructed to:

  • Boost police visibility in crowded areas
  • Conduct manpower audits
  • Reinforce vehicle checks and checkpoints
  • Ensure CCTV and metal detectors at all judicial complexes are functional

A statewide cordon and search operation was carried out at all district and sub-divisional courts. Over 694 suspicious individuals were frisked, 1,160 vehicles were checked, 129 challans issued, and 4 vehicles impounded.

The Punjab Police reaffirmed its commitment to tackling gangster networks, organised crime, and cross-border terror threats, calling them top priorities alongside the anti-drug crackdown.
