Rumours are heating up in the Tamil film industry as reports suggest that actor Vijay Sethupathi may be part of Superstar Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated sequel Jailer 2. Though there has been no official confirmation yet, industry sources claim that the acclaimed actor has already joined the film’s shoot, currently progressing in Goa under director Nelson Dilipkumar.
According to insiders, filming for Sethupathi’s portions is underway, indicating that his role might be substantial. The news has ignited considerable excitement among fans, given the star power and acting calibre both Sethupathi and Rajinikanth bring to the screen. If confirmed, this collaboration could be one of the biggest highlights of the sequel.
Shoot progresses with major cast members joining
Sources reveal that the Jailer 2 schedule in Goa is in full swing, forming one of the film’s crucial shooting legs. While Sun Pictures and the makers have maintained secrecy around the cast, strong buzz points to several major additions. This includes actress Mirnaa, who reportedly returns as Swetha Pandian, Rajinikanth’s daughter-in-law, and is said to have a more significant role this time.
Earlier, actress Ramya Krishnan shared a glimpse of her involvement, posting an Instagram story from her first day on set in Attappadi, Kerala. “26 years of Padayappa and the first day shoot of Jailer 2,” she wrote. Ramya reprises her role as Vijaya Pandian (Viji), wife of Rajinikanth’s character Muthuvel Pandian.
Kannada superstar Dr Shiva Rajkumar and Malayalam legend Mohanlal — both of whom appeared in impactful cameo roles in the first film — are also expected to return. However, like Sethupathi’s inclusion, their participation too remains unconfirmed officially.
Rajinikanth earlier stated shoot would continue till December
Rajinikanth had hinted in May this year that filming for Jailer 2 would extend until December. Speaking to reporters at Chennai airport, he said, “Shooting of Jailer 2 is progressing well. It will be December by the time the film ends.” His statement aligns with the ongoing schedules in Chennai, Kerala, and now Goa.
The film’s production began on March 10 this year, as announced by Sun Pictures through a video confirming the start of shoot. Since then, interest in the film has skyrocketed, with fans eagerly tracking every update.
Massive expectations following Jailer’s success
Jailer, released in 2023, was a massive blockbuster that grossed around ₹650 crore worldwide, establishing itself as one of Rajinikanth’s highest earners. Its blend of action, humour, cameo appearances, and Anirudh Ravichander’s pulsating music played a major role in its success.
Naturally, fans have pinned high expectations on Jailer 2. The teaser released by Sun Pictures earlier this year only amplified the hype, with its mix of quirky humour and dramatic visuals reminiscent of director Nelson’s signature style.
Anirudh, whose background score and songs became chart-toppers in the first part, returns as music director for the sequel. His involvement further fuels anticipation surrounding the film’s soundscape.
Industry buzz and the road ahead
While viewers await official word on Vijay Sethupathi’s casting, industry trackers believe his addition could elevate the film significantly. Known for seamlessly transitioning between lead, character, and antagonist roles, Sethupathi’s presence is often associated with strong performances and added emotional depth.
For now, fans continue to wait for Sun Pictures to reveal the final cast list. With filming progressing at a rapid pace and major stars reportedly joining the sets, Jailer 2 is shaping up to be one of Tamil cinema’s biggest projects in 2025.
The production is expected to complete principal photography by the end of the year, after which post-production will begin. An official release date is yet to be announced.
