Telangana has secured the top position in the Jal Sanchay – Jan Bhagidari (Water Conservation – Public Participation) category at the 6th National Water Awards 2024, announced by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. The state achieved the country’s number one rank by completing 5,20,362 water conservation works under the nationwide initiative launched earlier this year.

Telangana leads the nation in water conservation efforts

The Jal Sanchay – Jan Bhagidari programme, aimed at promoting community-led water conservation, saw significant participation from Telangana. President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards on Tuesday to states, districts and institutions demonstrating exceptional commitment to sustainable water management.

Officials noted that Telangana’s performance reflects its strong policy push towards water security, groundwater recharge and public involvement in environmental protection efforts.

Telangana districts sweep Southern Zone honours

In the District Category (Category 1) – Southern Zone, Telangana districts achieved a clean sweep, winning all top three awards.
The winners are:

  • Adilabad – 1st
  • Nalgonda – 2nd
  • Mancherial – 3rd

Together, they won a total prize amount of ₹6 crore, marking a significant recognition of district-level water conservation initiatives.

Hyderabad Water Board secures second place

In the Municipal Corporation category, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) clinched the second rank. The board received an award of ₹2 crore for its water conservation projects within the GHMC limits, including advancements in wastewater management, rainwater harvesting structures and supply optimisation.

Additional awards for Telangana districts

Telangana continued its winning streak across other categories as well.

Category 2 – Southern Zone (₹1 crore each)

The following districts secured the top three ranks:

  • Warangal – 1st
  • Nirmal – 2nd
  • Jangaon – 3rd

Category 3 – Southern Zone (₹25 lakh each)

  • Bhadradri Kothagudem – 1st
  • Mahabubnagar – 3rd

The awards highlight the widespread and consistent implementation of water conservation practices across the state.

Recognition for Central Water Commission officer

Additionally, A. Satish, Nodal Officer for multiple Telangana districts — Adilabad, Jagtial, Kamareddy, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Medak, Nirmal, Nizamabad and Sangareddy — from the Central Water Commission, received a national award for his contribution to the programme. His efforts in coordinating and monitoring water conservation works were recognised at the national level.
