Mangaluru: Yenepoya Medical College Hospital has marked a major milestone in advanced medical technology by adopting the SSI Mantra 3.0 robotic surgical system, an innovative, Made-in-India solution for complex surgeries.

Announcing the development at a press conference, Yenepoya University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vijay Kumar highlighted that the hospital is the only private medical college hospital in the country to house two advanced robotic surgical systems – the da Vinci Surgical System and the newly acquired Mantra 3.0.

Proud moment for Indian innovation

Dr. Kumar praised the achievement, calling it a moment of pride for Indian medical innovation. “The SSI Mantra 3.0 is a world-class device designed and manufactured in India, proving that our medical technology is on par with global standards,” he said.

The Mantra 3.0 is an upgraded version of the Mantra 2.0, representing a leap forward in robotic-assisted surgery. The hospital has already completed nearly 100 procedures with the new system in urology, oncology, gynaecology, and general surgery.

Commitment to affordable healthcare

One of the most notable aspects of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital’s initiative is its commitment to providing free robotic surgery to economically disadvantaged patients through government and social security schemes.

“This step ensures that cutting-edge technology is accessible to all sections of society, particularly those who cannot afford advanced surgical care,” said Chancellor Dr. Yenepoya Abdullah Kunha.

Robotic surgery legacy

Yenepoya introduced robotic surgery in coastal Karnataka and North Kerala in 2016, becoming the first institution in the region to deploy the da Vinci Surgical System. Since then, the hospital has successfully conducted over 1,000 robotic procedures, specialising in urology, oncology, and gynaecology.

According to experts at the hospital, robotic surgery offers several benefits:

  • Smaller incisions

  • Reduced pain and blood loss

  • Faster recovery and fewer complications

  • Enhanced precision and safety for complex procedures

  • Training the next generation of robotic surgeons

As a premier teaching hospital, Yenepoya is also a training hub for robotic surgery. Surgeons, oncologists, gynaecologists, paramedical staff, and nursing specialists from India and abroad are trained here through simulation labs, hands-on sessions, and real-time surgical experience.

“By building expertise in robotic surgery, we are preparing the next generation of highly skilled medical professionals,” said Dr. Kumar.

    Visionary leadership

Vice-Chancellor Farhad Yenepoya reiterated the hospital’s commitment to world-class care, emphasising that cutting-edge technology would be made affordable and accessible to the underprivileged.
