A 28-year-old woman from Thenka village in Kaup taluk has lodged a complaint alleging that her husband, Mubeen Sheikh, unilaterally pronounced triple talaq via WhatsApp, along with repeated demands for dowry and physical abuse.
According to her statement to the Padubidri police, the couple married on October 21, 2024, at Koppalangadi Community Hall. The bride’s family allegedly gave 12.5 pavan of gold ornaments and ₹20 lakh in cash as dowry, as demanded by the groom’s side.
Initially, the woman said she was treated well for a month after moving to her husband’s home in Yermal. Later, she allegedly faced escalating mental and physical harassment from her husband and in-laws. Matters worsened when her father visited and was reportedly verbally abused by her sister-in-law Rasheen, who also allegedly struck the complainant on her back when questioned.
On December 12, 2024, the husband reportedly left for a foreign country. After his departure, the in-laws allegedly demanded more gold and money, warning that she could not stay in the house without fulfilling these demands. She also claimed she received threats to her life.
The situation reached a breaking point on July 15, when her husband allegedly sent a WhatsApp message pronouncing triple talaq.
Police have registered a case under Sections 85, 115(2), 352, 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and Section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act
