Residents of Sulebailu in Urugadur, on the outskirts of Shivamogga city, staged a candlelight protest on Wednesday night condemning the murder of 16-year-old student Sanket.

Villagers cutting across caste and religious lines gathered on the streets holding placards bearing Sanket’s photograph and lit candles as a mark of tribute. Slogans were raised condemning the killing, while appeals were made for peace and harmony in the locality.

Locals blame drug menace

During the protest, residents alleged that rampant drug trafficking and illegal liquor shops in the area were among the root causes behind the incident. They claimed that the illegal sale of ganja and alcohol was misleading youth and school students.

Villagers demanded strict action against anti-social elements operating in the area and urged authorities to crack down on drug peddling and unauthorised liquor outlets.

The protesters later met Additional Superintendent of Police Kariappa and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate intervention and preventive measures.

Seven minors in custody

Sanket, an SSLC student of the Government High School at Urugadur, was allegedly assaulted outside his school by a group of boys when he intervened in an argument related to a cricket match. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead.

Police have reportedly taken seven minors into custody in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among parents and residents, with calls for stronger community vigilance and law enforcement to ensure student safety.
