In a shocking case from Hosa Jambraghatta village in Shivamogga district, a 45-year-old woman named Geetamma lost her life during a violent ritual falsely claimed to be an exorcism. A woman named Asha, now in police custody, is accused of carrying out the deadly act.
The horrifying incident took place late Sunday night. Around 9:30 PM, Asha visited Geetamma’s residence and informed her son Sanjay that his mother was under the influence of a spirit. Convinced by Asha’s assertion, Sanjay reportedly gave her permission to proceed with what she called a cleansing ritual.
What followed was a brutal assault. Asha began striking Geetamma with a stick, claiming the spirit was resisting departure. She then dragged Geetamma to a temple located nearly 2.5 km away, where the beatings continued for several hours—until around 2:30 AM.
Asha is also said to have conducted a puja near the victim’s home before pulling her outside, insisting she was still possessed. During the attack, she allegedly smashed a heavy stone on Geetamma’s head and poured cold water over her. Geetamma collapsed, suffering from severe head trauma and likely hypothermia.
Despite her critical state, Asha announced the ritual’s success and sent her back home. Geetamma’s health declined rapidly, and she was rushed to the Holehonnur community hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A disturbing video of the incident has since surfaced online. Following Sanjay’s complaint, a case was registered and SP Mithun Kumar visited the scene.
