Bengaluru is an IT hub. Wherever we see in the City only, we can find huge buildings. But in that concrete jungle, there are many beautiful tourist getaways around. We have tried to narrow down two destinations to help you relax and unwind in nature. One of these places is Skandagiri, located about 60 km from Bengaluru and a perfect destination for a one-day outing.
Skandagiri, situated 3 km from Chikkaballapura Town, is a scenic weekend getaway that also serves as an adventure weekend getaway. It is a hill with the ruins of a fort which dates back to the 18th century. The defence is in a dilapidated condition and the temple is close to it, but that takes nothing away from the trek to the top of the mountain.
The trek to the top of Skandagiri is on the more accessible side, with a well-marked route. The early part of the trek is dry in terms of vegetation. However, as you start getting close to the top of the hill, you begin to see lush vegetation. The top of the mountain offers panoramic views of the valley below.
Standing there, on top of the hill, you almost feel like a ruler with an eye on your kingdom. Although the fort is in terrible condition, take a walk around it to enjoy its mysticism.
Tipu Sultan, in the 18th century, fought against the British Raj. Unfortunately, Tipu Sultan lost the battle and the fort went into the hands of the British. It remained in the hands of the British Raj until the Peace Treaty in 1792. After that, the regiment had to take a hit. It now lies in a dilapidated condition, with only some of its walls standing tall to tell the tale of an unforgettable historic event. The two temples, one at the bottom and one at the top, are survivors to which no great harm was done while everything else lies in rubble.
Skandagiri Hill is one of the few trekking routes around Bengaluru where a night trek is possible. The hike to the top of the hill takes about 2 hours, which means if you start at midnight, you should reach the top by 2.00 am and spend a little time camping at the top before the break of dawn.
Nandi Hills and Kotilingeshwara are the nearby places one can visit during the Skandagiri trip. September to February is the best time to visit Sakandagiri.
