Ferrero Rocher is widely recognized for its delectable hazelnut chocolates, but what many may not know is the company’s deep tie to Our Lady of Lourdes.

Founder’s Devotion to Mary

Michele Ferrero, the founder of Ferrero, was a devout Catholic with a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He sought to honor her through his work, naming his company “Rocher” after the rock grotto, Rocher de Massabielle, where Mary reportedly appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France. “Rocher” translates to “rock” in French, symbolizing the rocky formation at Lourdes.

Symbolism in Chocolate Design

Many believe that Ferrero incorporated symbolism into the design of Ferrero Rocher chocolates to resemble the rocky grotto at Lourdes. The crunchy coating and uneven gold wrapping are seen as nods to this significant location for the chocolatier.

Acknowledgment of Devotion

At the company’s 50th anniversary, Ferrero attributed its success to Our Lady of Lourdes, stating, “Without her we can do little.” Father Mauricio Elias, a chaplain at the Sanctuary of Lourdes, affirmed Ferrero’s devotion, noting his frequent pilgrimages to Lourdes and philanthropic contributions.

Continued Tradition and Generosity

Ferrero’s commitment to his faith extended beyond personal devotion. He ensured that each of his company’s 14 production facilities worldwide had a statue of the Virgin Mary. Despite his passing in 2015, his children upheld his promise to donate to the sanctuary’s repairs after a flood, continuing the family’s legacy of generosity.

Legacy and Expansion

Today, Ferrero Rocher remains a family-run business, led by Michele’s son, Giovanni Ferrero. Founded in 1946 in Italy, the company has expanded globally, becoming the third-largest chocolate producer worldwide. Alongside Ferrero Rocher, the company boasts other beloved brands such as Nutella, Tic Tac, and Kinder, carrying forward Michele Ferrero’s vision and devotion.
