In the second Test match against England at Vizag, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin fell just short of a significant milestone, remaining on 499 Test wickets as India secured a 106-run victory. Despite his efforts, Ashwin couldn’t quite surpass Anil Kumble to become the fastest Indian to reach 500 Test wickets.

However, Ashwin did etch his name in the annals of cricket history by becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in Test matches against England, surpassing the legendary Bhagwath Chandrasekhar. Chandrasekhar had previously claimed 95 wickets in 23 Tests against England, with 8 five-wicket hauls to his credit.

Heading into the Vizag Test, Ashwin was just 2 wickets shy of achieving this feat. Although he remained wicketless in the first innings, Ashwin bounced back in the second innings, clinching three crucial wickets to bring his total tally to 499.

Despite his remarkable achievement, Ashwin isn’t at the top of the list of leading wicket-takers in Test matches between India and England. That honor belongs to veteran English pacer James Anderson, who boasts 144 wickets in 36 Tests against India.

While Ashwin narrowly missed out on the milestone of reaching 500 Test wickets, it was Jasprit Bumrah’s outstanding performance that stole the show, guiding India to a memorable victory and leveling the series 1-1.
