India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has launched a no-holds-barred counterattack on critics, particularly a couple of unnamed former Indian captains from Mumbai, who he implied have long treated Indian cricket like their personal domain. Speaking at the ABP News ‘India At 2047’ Summit, Gambhir responded sharply to remarks questioning his coaching style, past injuries, and use of prize money.
In a scathing remark, he said, “People sitting in commentary boxes for 25 years believe Indian cricket is their personal fiefdom. But Indian cricket doesn’t belong to any one person—it belongs to 140 crore Indians.”
Referring indirectly to Sunil Gavaskar, who had recently criticized Gambhir in his column regarding Champions Trophy prize money distribution, Gambhir rebuked the idea that he owed anyone an explanation. “Those living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones,” he said, also accusing unnamed critics of being NRIs who earn in India but invest abroad, contrasting them with his commitment to remain a resident Indian.
Gambhir also addressed rumours of a rift with Rohit Sharma, dismissing them as baseless speculation. He affirmed his respect for Rohit, noting their recent Champions Trophy win together: “We delivered results together. I’ve always respected Rohit, and that won’t change.”
Known for his bluntness, Gambhir made it clear: criticism is fair, but personal jabs wrapped in nostalgia and entitlement are not.
