New Delhi: Mirabai Chanu finally got a chance to redeem herself at the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA, when she became the first Indian to win a gold medal in over twenty years.
She set a new national record by lifting 85 kgs in snatch and 109 kgs in clean and jerk, making the total a whopping 194 kgs in the women’s 48 kgs category.
Following her disappointing performance in Rio, last year, where she was unable to clear the clean and jerk round, this win has indeed helped Chanu make a mark on the national and international weight lifting landscape.
Sukcharoen Thunya of Thailand came in second and Segura Ana Iris came in third, taking the silver and bronze respectively.
Doping related issues prevented teams of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan from participating in the event.
