India batter Ishan Kishan revealed that he played the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final under emotional circumstances, dedicating his performance to his cousin sister who passed away in a car accident a day before the match.
Kishan scored a crucial half-century in the final against New Zealand, helping India post a massive total and secure a 96-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The win ensured India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title.
Personal tragedy before the final
Speaking after the match, the 27-year-old Jharkhand cricketer shared that he received the heartbreaking news of his cousin sister’s death just hours before the final.
“Before the game, I lost my cousin sister yesterday in a car accident. I played well for her,” Kishan told reporters after the match.
He added that the victory held even deeper meaning as the final was played on International Women’s Day, making his dedication to her especially emotional.
“I dedicate this win to her, and today is Women’s Day, so it makes it all the more special,” he said.
Hardik Pandya’s words of support
Kishan also revealed that he spoke with his teammate Hardik Pandya, who encouraged him to stay focused on the game and prioritise the team despite the personal loss.
“I spoke to Hardik bhai. He told me to put the team ahead,” Kishan said, acknowledging the support he received from within the squad during the difficult moment.
A remarkable comeback journey
Kishan’s performance in the World Cup final marked the latest chapter in an inspiring comeback story.
The wicketkeeper-batter had fallen out of favour during Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach, after requesting a break midway through a series against South Africa. The decision reportedly did not go down well with the team management and selectors.
However, Kishan worked his way back into contention with outstanding performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored heavily to reclaim attention from the national selectors.
Key role in India’s World Cup triumph
His persistence paid off during the T20 World Cup 2026, where he became one of India’s key performers.
Kishan finished the tournament as India’s second-highest run-scorer, behind Sanju Samson, and played several impactful innings throughout the campaign.
In the final, his aggressive batting helped India build a formidable total of 255 runs, putting immense pressure on New Zealand.
India’s bowlers later completed the job, bowling out New Zealand for 159 to seal a dominant victory and script another historic chapter in Indian cricket.
