India cricketer KL Rahul has opened up about the food habits that keep him fit through rigorous training, travel, and long match schedules — and at the heart of his routine is a staple many Indians love: dosa.
In an interview with Jatin Sapru for Humans of Bombay, Rahul said he eats dosa six days a week whenever he is at home, pairing it with eggs as part of his breakfast. “Morning breakfast will be dosa and bhurji or eggs… If I’m at home in India and I’m getting dosa, I’m eating dosa six days a week,” he said.
Mindful Eating, Not Strict Restrictions
Rahul emphasised portion control rather than cutting foods out completely.
“I just manage my quantities. I don’t eat sugar — I control sugar. I stay away from wheat, but I’m not saying I’m completely off it. I will still eat a pizza once in a while. I have a calorie count in a day, and I try to manage all of that,” he shared.
He added that he avoids chicken and prefers seafood, mutton, and lamb for protein.
What His Daily Meals Look Like
Rahul’s breakfast typically includes:
- Four eggs (in any form — omelette, scrambled, bhurji, Eggs Benedict)
- Dosa or gluten-free toast (when abroad)
- A protein blend with berries, bananas, nuts, and healthy fats
Lunch, however, is non-negotiable:
“Afternoon meal wherever I am in the world is Indian. I have to eat Indian food wherever I am.”
Precision in Portions
Rahul revealed he adjusts his carb intake depending on training load:
- 150g of rice on rest days
- 200g of carbs on match/training days
- 200–250g of protein
- 150–200g vegetables, usually sautéed or in subzi form
Dinner stays similar to lunch but “lighter, more continental.”
Rahul said the goal is balance, not deprivation: “I don’t have any restrictions on what I can or can’t eat, but I try to avoid aloo sometimes.”
