New Delhi: England head coach Brendon McCullum has dismissed reports of a rift with captain Ben Stokes, insisting their relationship remains strong despite a turbulent couple of weeks in English cricket.

Speculation had emerged following Stokes’ omission from the second Test against New Zealand, alongside pacer Gus Atkinson, after both were found to have breached certain contractual obligations during a night out following England’s win in the first Test at Lord’s.

No strain in leadership bond

Addressing the rumours, McCullum clarified that his equation with Stokes remains intact. He described Stokes as a “good friend” and revealed that the two had a productive conversation ahead of the third Test.

McCullum said Stokes appeared motivated and ready to return, adding that it was positive for the team to have their leader back in the fold.

He emphasised that both he and Stokes share a common vision for English cricket and remain aligned on the direction the team should take.

Return after brief setback

Stokes and Atkinson have been recalled to the squad for the third and final Test at Trent Bridge, with the series currently level at 1-1.

During the period of investigation, Stokes featured for his county side Durham and impressed with a knock of 95, underlining his readiness to return to international cricket.

McCullum acknowledged that there was a process to follow before Stokes could be reinstated but confirmed that all necessary steps had now been completed.

Focus shifts to series decider

With the controversy behind them, England now turn their attention to the crucial third Test. McCullum expressed confidence in Stokes’ form and leadership, describing him as “outstanding” and “fantastic” ahead of the match.

England had won the opening Test by 115 runs before New Zealand levelled the series with a commanding 253-run victory in the second Test at The Oval.

United front for England

McCullum’s comments reinforce a united leadership group as England prepare for the decisive clash. The coach reiterated that both he and Stokes are focused on what is best for the team and the future of English cricket.

With tensions eased and key players back, England will look to regroup and deliver a strong performance in the series finale.
