In a T20 spectacle for the ages, the Netherlands edged past Nepal in Glasgow after an unprecedented three super overs, marking the first time in men’s professional cricket — across both T20 and List A formats — that a match has gone to a third super over.
The Dutch posted a competitive 152-7, and appeared to be cruising, with Nepal requiring 16 off the final over. But Nandan Yadav stunned the Dutch by hitting two boundaries, including one off the last ball, to level the scores.
In the first super over, Kushal Bhurtel hammered 18 off 5 balls for Nepal, but Max O’Dowd responded with a six and a four in the last two balls to match it.
The second super over saw O’Dowd and skipper Scott Edwards put up 17 runs. Once again, Nepal responded heroically, with Dipendra Singh Airee launching a final-ball six to tie again.
In the third and final showdown, Dutch spinner Zach Lion-Cachet silenced Nepal’s hopes by claiming two wickets in four balls without conceding a run.
Michael Levitt then sealed the match with style, smashing Sandeep Lamichhane’s first delivery for six, ending the most dramatic contest in recent memory.
While the Dutch savour a historic victory, Nepal must regroup quickly as they face Scotland next in the ongoing T20 tri-series.
