Clearer conversations in noisy places

Meta has announced a new update for its AI-powered smart glasses that aims to make conversations easier to follow in loud environments. The feature, called conversation focus, will initially roll out in the United States and Canada for Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses.

Using the glasses’ open-ear speakers, the tool amplifies the voice of the person a wearer is speaking to, helping cut through background noise in places such as busy restaurants, bars, clubs and commuter trains. Users can fine-tune the amplification level by swiping the right temple of the glasses or adjusting settings on the device.

The feature was first revealed at Meta’s Connect conference earlier this year and is positioned as a practical, everyday enhancement rather than a novelty addition.

Spotify feature links vision with sound

Alongside conversation focus, Meta is also introducing a new Spotify-based feature that connects what users see with the music they hear. With this update, wearers can play songs that match their current view.

For example, looking at an album cover could trigger music by that artist, while a festive scene such as a decorated Christmas tree could prompt holiday songs. While largely experimental, the feature highlights Meta’s broader vision of linking visual context with actions across apps.

Unlike the conversation focus tool, the Spotify feature will be available in English across several markets, including India, the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Australia, parts of Europe and the UAE.

Part of a wider trend in smart audio

Meta’s move reflects a growing trend of using wearable technology to enhance hearing in everyday situations. Similar ideas already exist in consumer audio products, where smart earbuds offer features that help users concentrate on nearby voices.

However, Meta has not positioned the glasses as medical devices. Instead, the company describes them as lifestyle wearables that provide situational audio support when needed.

Rollout and availability

The update, labelled software version 21, will first reach users enrolled in Meta’s Early Access Program. This programme requires joining a waitlist and receiving approval before accessing new features. A wider rollout is planned at a later stage.

While the conversation focus feature is currently limited to North America, the broader availability of Spotify integration suggests Meta is prioritising global engagement, including markets like India where interest in wearable tech continues to grow.

As smart glasses gain new capabilities, Meta appears focused on making them more useful in real-world social settings rather than just experimental gadgets.
