New Delhi: Perplexity’s AI-powered browser, Comet, is now available for free to Mac and Windows users without a waitlist. Previously restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers, Comet aims to redefine web browsing for users who rely heavily on the internet for work, research, and content consumption.
AI-powered browsing with Comet Assistant
Unlike traditional browsers like Chrome or Firefox, Comet uses a workspace-based interface rather than tabs, offering users quick access to all the information they need. The browser’s key feature, Comet Assistant, functions similarly to Copilot in Microsoft Edge. Users can ask questions about a webpage, summarise content, and navigate pages via AI assistance.
Additionally, Comet can track a user’s browsing activity, including what they’ve read or are currently working on, and suggest relevant content accordingly. To streamline workflow, the browser automatically closes inactive tabs and reminds users of their previous sessions.
Every new tab in Comet comes with its own AI assistant, allowing multiple parallel queries. Users also have access to tools such as Discover for personalised news and content recommendations, Shopping for price comparisons, and categories like Travel, Space, Finance, and Sports.
Limited features for free users
While Comet is free to use, some features remain exclusive to paid Max subscribers. These include:
- Email Assistant: Helps draft replies matching the user’s tone.
- Background Assistant: Can perform multiple tasks in the background while users focus on other work.
Designed for work-focused users
Perplexity Comet seeks to simplify online work by integrating AI directly into the browsing experience, potentially making it more efficient than conventional browsers like Opera or Chrome for professional users. However, the reliance on advanced features may result in slower adoption among casual users.
The move reflects a growing trend of AI-powered tools becoming integrated into everyday digital workflows, catering to knowledge workers and research-heavy professionals who benefit from automated insights and summarisation.
Comet’s minimalistic interface, personalised tools, and AI-driven assistance make it an attractive alternative for users looking to streamline tasks, reduce cognitive load, and improve online productivity.
