WhatsApp has started testing a new feature, ‘Ask Meta AI’, designed to allow users to fact-check messages directly within chats. Currently available to iOS users through the TestFlight beta programme, the tool is expected to roll out more widely after further testing, according to media reports.
The Meta-owned messaging platform frequently introduces features to beta users to refine them before a global launch. WhatsApp already integrates Meta AI, which can provide answers on topics ranging from current events to problem-solving queries. The new addition builds on this, offering real-time verification of specific messages.
How the feature works
Previously, users had to forward a message manually to Meta AI and type a prompt to verify its accuracy. With ‘Ask Meta AI’, this process becomes streamlined. Users can now query the AI assistant directly from within the chat, making it easier to perform proactive fact-checking, particularly in busy groups or community conversations where misinformation can spread rapidly.
According to WABetaInfo, the tool is already available in beta for Android users as well. The integration allows users to check the credibility of messages without leaving the app, which could significantly curb the spread of false information.
Privacy-focused design
Meta emphasises that the tool has been built with user privacy in mind. Messages are not automatically shared with Meta AI. Users must manually confirm before sending any content for fact-checking. Selecting “Ask Meta AI” alone does not transmit any data, and users can choose how much context to provide to the AI for accurate responses.
This design ensures that sensitive conversations remain private while still allowing users to verify claims. The AI then provides detailed responses based on the context supplied, helping users make informed judgments about the messages they receive.
Significance in combating misinformation
Misinformation on messaging platforms has been a persistent challenge worldwide. WhatsApp’s latest feature could mark a significant step forward, embedding fact-checking tools directly into conversations. By enabling real-time verification, users are empowered to challenge inaccurate or misleading content before it spreads further.
Industry analysts note that as AI tools become more integrated into messaging platforms, they may play a crucial role in maintaining trust and credibility in digital communication, particularly in high-volume group chats.
As the feature progresses beyond the beta stage, it could become a standard tool for WhatsApp users, complementing other initiatives to tackle false information on the platform.
