WhatsApp has rolled out a new AI-driven feature that allows users to summarise unread personal chats with just a tap. Designed for those who are constantly on the move or overwhelmed by too many messages, this feature leverages Meta AI to provide concise bullet-point summaries of missed messages, helping users quickly catch up.
How It Works
This Message Summaries feature is powered by Private Processing Technology, a secure computing setup that ensures users’ messages remain private. Meta AI processes the data within a protected cloud environment, ensuring no human—neither at Meta nor WhatsApp—can access the messages or the summaries generated.
-
The feature is optional and turned off by default.
Users can manually enable the summaries and choose which chats allow AI assistance using Advanced Chat Privacy settings.
Currently, the feature is available in the US and will expand to other regions and languages later in 2025.
What Is Private Processing Technology?
Private Processing is Meta’s approach to ensuring AI processes tasks like summarising chats or offering writing suggestions securely and privately. It’s designed to balance the usefulness of AI with stringent data confidentiality.
WhatsApp Ads Are Here
In addition to AI tools, WhatsApp is now rolling out advertisements in the Updates tab, similar to Instagram Stories ads. These ads will be shown between status updates and will be personalised using data such as:
-
User’s city/country
Language preferences
Followed channels
WhatsApp will also monetise via Channel subscriptions and promotions, with payments handled through app stores.
