Bengaluru: X (formerly Twitter) is testing new profile features that will display an account’s country of origin and its username change history. This move aims to enhance transparency and reduce anonymity on the platform.

New Profile Features

As part of an ongoing experiment, X will show:

  • Country of Origin: Indicating the country where the account is based, such as the US, UK, or India.
  • Username Change History: Displaying how many times an account has changed its username and when the last change occurred.

These features are similar to those on Instagram, where location information is optional. X may also make these new features optional, but opting out could result in the information being highlighted.

Testing Phase

Initially, these features will appear on a select number of profiles, primarily those of X team members, to gather feedback. Users can expect to see them on profiles like those of Nikita Bier, Keith Coleman, and Elon Musk.

Purpose and Impact

The introduction of these features aims to:

  • Reduce Scams and Spam: By providing more information about account origins and activity.
  • Enhance Transparency: Helping users understand who they are interacting with on the platform.
  • Improve User Experience: Offering clearer insights into account histories and locations.

These changes are still in the testing phase, but they could be a significant step toward making X a safer and more transparent platform.
