On December 16, 2024, Nirbhaya‘s mother, Asha Devi, spoke emotionally about the lack of progress in ensuring safety for women across India, twelve years after the brutal gang-rape and murder of her daughter. Despite changes in laws and increased awareness, she noted that daughters remain vulnerable in every part of the country, be it in schools, offices, or even at home.
Asha Devi, addressing the National Convention on Prevention of Violence Against Women and Children, reflected on the failures of the system, citing delayed investigations, underreporting of crimes, and the continued prevalence of violence against women. She expressed deep frustration over how incidents like the RG Kar case in Kolkata still remain unresolved, with the authorities unable to provide closure.
Her emotional appeal was directed towards both the government and the police, urging them to ensure that the justice system works effectively for all women, ensuring swift trials, appropriate penalties, and robust preventive measures. Asha Devi emphasized the need for real change in the way laws are enforced, focusing on creating a safer environment for future generations. She called for a unified effort from the government, police, and society to make India a place where women can feel safe and secure, regardless of their age, location, or background.
Her speech highlighted the painful truth that, even after losing her daughter, she could not find peace, as the justice system continues to fail many families facing similar tragedies. Despite securing justice for her own daughter, Asha Devi expressed how little comfort that provided, given the ongoing struggle of countless other parents still waiting for justice for their lost loved ones.
Her remarks were a stark reminder that while progress has been made in some areas, the battle for the safety and rights of women in India is far from over.
