Udupi: A 19-year-old youth from Jharkhand, working in Karkala taluk, died after allegedly consuming poison following his distress over losing money to an online scam.

The deceased has been identified as Sujek Ram (19), a resident of Barwadih Thana, Jharkhand. He had been employed at a rubber plantation firm owned by Kuriyakose at Chenni Bettu, Kadtala, Karkala taluk.

Incident

According to police, on August 15 at around 2 pm, Sujek consumed pesticide in his room at Chenni Bettu after receiving a fraudulent mobile message through which he lost ₹7,000.

He was initially rushed to Karkala Government Hospital, later shifted to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, and finally admitted to AJ Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite prolonged medical care, he succumbed on September 7.

Case registered

Based on a complaint filed by his elder brother, the Ajekar police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Further investigation is underway.
