Karkala: A major fire that accidentally broke out in a grassland area at Indiranagar in Sanur village limits of Karkala taluk destroyed nearly eight acres of land on Thursday, causing panic among residents in the locality for several hours.
The fire was eventually brought under control after a prolonged operation by personnel from the Karkala Fire and Emergency Services station, who battled the blaze for nearly six hours.
According to officials, the fire started suddenly in a vacant grassland area that had dense and tall dry grass, which allowed the flames to spread rapidly across the land.
Fire spreads rapidly across grassland
The Indiranagar locality has more than 300 houses, and several nearby vacant plots had thick grass growth due to the dry weather conditions.
Residents reported that the fire broke out unexpectedly and spread within minutes, engulfing a large portion of the grassland. The rising flames and thick smoke created panic among people living in nearby houses.
Locals feared that the fire could spread further and reach residential areas if it was not controlled quickly.
Fire department rushes to the spot
The fire department received information about the incident at around 10.30 am, following which a team from the Karkala Fire and Emergency Services station rushed to the location.
Firefighters immediately began efforts to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading towards the residential area.
Due to the presence of dry grass over a large stretch of land, the flames were difficult to control in the initial stages.
Six-hour firefighting operation
The firefighting personnel carried out continuous operations for several hours before successfully extinguishing the fire.
Officials said the blaze was completely brought under control by around 4.30 pm, after nearly six hours of sustained efforts.
The timely intervention of the fire department helped prevent the flames from reaching nearby houses, thereby averting a potential disaster in the residential neighbourhood.
Fire personnel praised for quick response
The firefighting operation was led by Assistant Fire Station Officer Chandrashekar.
Other team members who participated in the operation included Achyut Karkera and Hariprasad Shettigar, along with drivers Jayamoolya, Nityananda, and Basavaraj.
Officials said the coordinated efforts of the team played a key role in bringing the situation under control.
Cause of fire under observation
Authorities believe the fire may have started accidentally, although the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
Local residents and officials have urged people to remain cautious during the dry season, as grasslands and open fields with dry vegetation are highly vulnerable to fire outbreaks.
Conclusion
The incident serves as a reminder of the fire risks posed by dry grass and vacant land areas, especially during warm weather conditions. While the blaze destroyed nearly eight acres of grassland, the swift response of firefighters prevented it from spreading to nearby residential areas and causing greater damage.
