Udupi: Continuous downpour coupled with strong gusts of wind over the past two days has wreaked havoc across Udupi district, with Hebri taluk bearing the maximum brunt. Hundreds of homes have been partially damaged, and thousands of trees have been uprooted, crippling normal life.
Severe destruction was reported from Hebri and Karkala taluks, where tiled houses and plantations were affected. Local panchayats have begun preparing damage reports, forwarding them to tahsildars. Revenue staff carried out field inspections and shared updates with senior authorities. Belman, Nandalike, Chara, and Mudradi emerged among the worst-hit pockets.
In Hebri alone, over 30 homes sustained damage, while in Kabbinale and Kapoli, nearly a dozen residences were hit. Areca nut plantations also suffered large-scale destruction. Belman reported damage to more than 25 houses. Electric poles and supply lines were knocked down, leaving several areas in darkness.
In Kundapur taluk, at least 14 houses were crushed under fallen trees, resulting in estimated losses of ₹5 lakh. Residences belonging to Koragaya Shetty, Lalitha Thimmappa Poojari, Devaki Devadiga, Manjunath Acharya, and others were among those damaged. Two cattle sheds, owned by Sita Kulal in Molahalli and Sheshagiri Acharya in Aluru, were destroyed, causing losses of about ₹80,000.
According to official rainfall data, between Monday and Tuesday morning the district received an average of 79 mm rain. Hebri topped the list with 105.5 mm, followed by Kundapur (92.8 mm), Byndoor (83.5 mm), Udupi (74.9 mm), Brahmavar (66.3 mm), Karkala (60.9 mm), and Kaup (39.5 mm).
With the red alert in place, schools and PU colleges were closed on Tuesday. Though showers eased later in the day, officials have warned of heavy rain in certain parts.
