Udupi: The dargah of Syed Arabhi Waliullahi, situated on the scenic Kapu seashore, stands as a living testimony to Hindu-Muslim unity. The annual Safar Ziarat (Urs), celebrated with fervor and devotion, brings together people of all faiths – Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike.
The shrine, located on land belonging to the Sriyan family of the Mogaveera community, has been a center of spiritual bonding for nearly 150 years. The Urs is traditionally held on the last Wednesday of the Islamic month of Safar, drawing thousands of devotees not only from Udupi but also from Kerala to Bhatkal.
One of the remarkable aspects of this dargah is the participation of local Hindus and Christians, who visit, pray, and even light lamps inside the shrine on regular days. The Urs Committee and Kapu Jamia Masjid management oversee the arrangements each year.
A highlight of the Urs is the distribution of sweet porridge (payas), prepared with contributions from local Hindus who provide essential ingredients. Offerings such as jaggery, rice, puffed rice (mandaki), jasmine flowers, and dates are considered sacred and shared among devotees as prasada.
This unique blend of traditions makes Kaipunjalu Urs not just a religious event but also a festival of communal harmony, reinforcing the spirit of unity across communities.
