Kaup: A college student from Manipal tragically drowned while swimming with friends at Mattu Beach near Katpadi on Thursday afternoon.
Victim identified
The deceased was identified as Veerurulkar (18), a native of Madhya Pradesh and a student at a college in Manipal. He had gone to the beach with a group of six friends for recreation.
Warnings ignored
According to locals, the students were cautioned about the strong sea currents and advised not to venture far into the waters. However, the warnings went unheeded. While swimming, the group was caught in the currents, leading to panic.
Local youths Aryan and Praveen rushed to their aid and managed to rescue some of the students. Unfortunately, Veerurulkar was pulled under by the waves and could not be saved despite immediate efforts.
Police investigation underway
Kaup police reached the spot soon after the incident and registered a case. The body was later recovered and sent for necessary formalities. Authorities said further investigation is in progress.
