Mangaluru/Udupi: The twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi were hit by widespread rain and gusty winds on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for June 26. The downpour triggered disruptions in daily life across multiple areas.

In Mangaluru city, intense showers and strong morning-to-afternoon winds led to the collapse of a tree and an electric pole near Vyasanagar, temporarily halting traffic flow.

Sullia taluk experienced persistent rain and high-speed winds starting in the morning and continuing into the evening. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying parts of the town due to poor drainage, creating problems for commuters. In Goonadka village (Sampaje), a tree branch fell on a stationary car, causing damage. Officials from MESCOM’s Sullia sub-division confirmed damage to power poles and electric lines in various localities because of fallen trees and debris.

Meanwhile, Udupi district witnessed moderate rainfall under cloudy skies, with strong winds sweeping through Padubidri, Uchila, Kaup, and Shirva areas.

In response to the increasing rainfall, particularly in ghat regions, Beltangady taluk authorities declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, primary, and high schools (government, aided, and private) on June 26. The closure order was issued by Tahsildar Prithvi Sanikem as a safety precaution.

The weather department has predicted continued showers with strong winds over the coming days, with a yellow alert in place for June 27 and 28.
