Udupi: Traffic signal poles that were once installed at key intersections across the city decades ago have long outlived their purpose. Initially introduced to streamline traffic flow, these iron poles functioned for only a short time before becoming defunct.

Today, these abandoned structures are slowly deteriorating. Exposed to years of rain and sun, many poles are now rusted, unstable, and tilting dangerously. With the onset of the monsoon, there’s a real threat that they may collapse during strong winds or heavy rain, endangering both motorists and pedestrians.

Local activists Nityananda Volakadu and Taranath Mesta Shiroor have raised concerns about the looming danger. They have appealed to the Udupi Municipal Council to take immediate action and remove these decaying poles from city streets before they cause harm.

One such damaged pole stands precariously near Canara Bank close to the old Taluk Office, reportedly cracked and at risk of falling onto passing vehicles or people. Similarly, several poles near the old Diana Circle have been left untouched for years. These now overgrown areas have turned into mini-jungles, attracting venomous creatures and creating additional safety hazards for the public.

The deteriorating condition of these poles is not only a safety issue but also an eyesore that mars the cityscape. Residents are urging swift intervention to prevent avoidable accidents and clean up the urban environment.
