Udupi: In a major economic uplift for households across Udupi district, the Karnataka state government’s five flagship guarantee schemes have collectively injected ₹1,616 crore over the past two years—transforming lives, particularly those of women and low-income families.

Gruha Lakshmi Leads the Charge

The Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which provides ₹2,000 monthly assistance to women, accounts for the largest share at ₹870.83 crore. With over 2.25 lakh women now benefitting, the scheme has empowered women to become key decision-makers in their homes.

In August 2023, 1.99 lakh women received ₹39.86 crore. By May 2025, the number climbed to 2.25 lakh, with ₹45.03 crore disbursed that month alone.

Electricity Relief via Gruha Jyothi

The Gruha Jyothi scheme, which waives electricity bills for households consuming under 200 units, has relieved over 2.85 lakh families—adding up to ₹418.04 crore in savings.

Food Security Through Anna Bhagya

The Anna Bhagya scheme has credited ₹223.75 crore into the accounts of 1.80 lakh individuals, ensuring consistent food access. Since January 2025, an extra 5 kg of rice per person is also being supplied.

Youth Empowerment via Yuva Nidhi

A total of ₹4.94 crore has been deposited into the accounts of 2,758 unemployed youth, providing crucial support during their job hunt.

Freedom to Travel: Shakti Scheme

Under the Shakti scheme, over 10.50 lakh women in Udupi have travelled free on state-run buses—saving ₹99.10 crore collectively and enhancing women’s mobility and independence.

On average, each household in the district gains ₹5,000–₹6,000/month through these combined schemes—leading to improved nutrition, financial stability, and dignity for thousands.

Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, president of the district implementation committee, confirmed that panchayat-level reviews and awareness drives will soon begin to further expand the reach and efficiency of these schemes.
