Udupi: The historic Sri Krishna Mutt has enforced a strict dress code for all devotees visiting the temple, making it mandatory for male devotees to remove their shirts before entering the temple premises. The directive, issued by the Paryaya Shiruru Mutt, came into effect from Monday, January 19, and will now be enforced throughout the day.

New dress code comes into force

The revised guidelines mandate strict adherence to traditional attire for all devotees entering the Sri Krishna Mutt. Temple authorities have clarified that the rules apply uniformly, without exception, and are aimed at preserving the sanctity and discipline of the revered shrine.

Under the new directive, male devotees must remove their shirts before entering the inner temple premises. While this practice existed earlier, it was limited only to devotees attending the early morning Mahapuja, which is held before 11.00 am. The latest decision extends the rule to the entire day, irrespective of the time of darshan.

Restrictions on modern attire

Temple authorities have also specified dress restrictions for women devotees. Women are required to wear modest and traditional attire while visiting the temple. Entry will be denied to devotees—both men and women—wearing jeans, T-shirts, sleeveless outfits, short dresses, or any form of non-traditional clothing.

Officials said the guidelines are meant to ensure that devotees enter the temple dressed in a manner befitting its religious and cultural significance. Security personnel and temple staff have been instructed to strictly monitor compliance at all entry points.

Decision rooted in tradition

Temple officials stated that the decision was taken to uphold the centuries-old customs and spiritual discipline associated with the Sri Krishna Mutt. “The intention behind enforcing the dress code is to preserve the sanctity of the temple and respect its age-old traditions,” a senior temple official said.

The Sri Krishna Mutt, founded by the philosopher-saint Sri Madhvacharya in the 13th century, follows a rich tradition of rituals and practices that have been maintained for generations. Authorities said the dress code is in line with these long-standing customs.

Earlier practice extended

Earlier, the requirement for male devotees to remove their shirts was applicable only during the early morning Mahapuja, a ritual that holds special spiritual significance. With the new directive, the temple administration has decided to extend the practice to all hours of darshan to maintain uniformity and discipline.

Officials said that selective enforcement often led to confusion among devotees, and extending the rule throughout the day would ensure clarity and consistency.

Devotees urged to cooperate

The temple administration has appealed to devotees to cooperate fully with the new guidelines and plan their visit accordingly. Notices informing devotees about the dress code have been displayed prominently within the temple premises and at entry points.

Temple officials said volunteers and staff have been deployed to guide devotees and explain the rules to avoid inconvenience. They also clarified that the intention is not to cause discomfort but to ensure reverence and decorum within the sacred space.

Mixed reactions from devotees

The decision has evoked mixed reactions among devotees. While many have welcomed the move, stating that it reinforces the spiritual atmosphere of the temple, some visitors have expressed concerns about inconvenience, especially tourists and first-time visitors who may not be aware of traditional practices.

However, temple authorities maintained that preserving tradition remains the top priority and that similar dress codes are followed in several prominent temples across the country.

Significance of Sri Krishna Mutt

The Sri Krishna Mutt is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in coastal Karnataka and attracts thousands of devotees every day. The temple is known for its unique worship practices, including the Kanakana Kindi, through which devotees view the idol of Lord Krishna.

Given its religious and cultural importance, the temple administration has often emphasised discipline and adherence to tradition as essential aspects of the devotional experience.

Conclusion

With the enforcement of the revised dress code, the Sri Krishna Mutt has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving its spiritual heritage and traditional values. While the guidelines may require adjustment from some devotees, temple authorities believe that cooperation and awareness will ensure a respectful and harmonious atmosphere within the temple premises.
