10-year-old migrant abandoned at US border on Thanksgiving
A 10-year-old migrant boy from El Salvador was discovered abandoned at the US-Mexico border in Maverick County, Texas, on Thanksgiving Day, carrying only a cell phone. Smugglers left the child in a desolate area, and he was found by Texas State Troopers. Tearfully, the boy explained in his native language that he was trying to reunite with his parents, who had already entered the US and relied on smugglers, or “coyotes,” to bring him across.
Texas DPS Lieutenant Christopher Olivarez shared the case on social media, highlighting the risks unaccompanied minors face in such perilous journeys. The boy, unaware of his location, was handed over to US Border Patrol for care and processing.
Olivarez drew attention to the broader crisis at the southern border, where many children endure dangerous conditions, trafficking, and exploitation. He emphasized that Texas DPS officers, as part of Operation Lone Star, have rescued over 900 children from similar situations.
This case mirrors a recent incident involving a two-year-old girl from El Salvador found alone at the border. These heart-wrenching stories shed light on the vulnerabilities of unaccompanied minors and the urgent need for safeguards.
The border crisis remains a contentious issue. While President-elect Donald Trump claimed to have secured Mexico’s cooperation in curbing migration, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum maintained that Mexico is focused on humane migration management without closing its borders.
