A nine-year-old Palestinian girl was killed after being shot while attending class inside a temporary school tent in northern Gaza Strip, according to reports.

The child, identified as Ritac Abdurrauf Reyhan, was critically injured in the incident and rushed to Al-Shifa Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts.

Shooting inside makeshift classroom

The incident occurred at a tent set up for educational purposes at Abu Ubayda bin Jarrah School, where children had gathered for lessons amid ongoing conflict.

Witnesses reported panic and chaos as the shooting unfolded inside the temporary classroom, highlighting the vulnerability of civilians, especially children, in conflict zones.

Rising toll despite ceasefire

The tragedy comes amid continuing tensions in the region. Reports indicate that tens of thousands of people have been killed and injured in Gaza since October 2023.

Even after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, violence has persisted, with hundreds reportedly killed and thousands injured in subsequent attacks.

Growing concern for children

The death of the young girl has intensified concerns about the safety of children and access to education in war-affected areas.

Aid organisations and observers have repeatedly warned about the risks faced by civilians in densely populated regions like Gaza, where schools and shelters often become unintended sites of danger.

A stark humanitarian reminder

The incident underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for sustained peace and protection of civilian lives, particularly children caught in conflict.
