Seoul : The controversy surrounding South Korea’s First Lady, Kim Keon Hee, and a purported acceptance of a Dior bag as a gift, has thrust President Yoon Suk Yeol and his People Power Party (PPP) into a potential election-threatening situation. Some members within the PPP have urged the president and his wife to apologize for the incident, known locally as the “Dior bag scandal,” and acknowledge the impropriety of receiving such a gift.

Yoon’s office has chosen to remain silent on the matter, prompting concerns that this approach could backfire and jeopardize the PPP’s chances in the upcoming parliamentary election in April. Political analysts warn that the issue could escalate, further damaging the party’s standing.

The incident came to light in November when a YouTube channel aired hidden camera footage showing a Korean American pastor, Rev. Abraham Choi, gifting the handbag to Kim. Choi, who had sought a meeting with Kim due to concerns about President Yoon’s North Korea policy, claims that luxury gifts were necessary to secure an audience with her.

Supporters of President Yoon argue that Kim is a victim of a set-up and a smear campaign. However, the acceptance of the purse, valued at 3 million won ($2,250), may have violated anti-bribery laws, according to analysts.

The controversy adds to existing allegations against Kim, including accusations of stock price manipulation from over a decade ago. A special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate these allegations, further complicating the political landscape.

Tensions within the PPP escalated when a party leader compared the situation to the notoriety of Marie Antoinette, causing a reported rift between President Yoon and the party’s leadership. Recent polls indicate that a significant portion of the public believes Yoon needs to address the controversy surrounding the First Lady, raising concerns about the PPP’s electoral prospects.

The “Dior bag scandal” has become a critical political issue, overshadowing Yoon’s presidency and creating uncertainty about the party’s performance in the upcoming election.
