A 28-year-old Asian man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Dubai Criminal Court after being caught in a carefully planned police sting while attempting to sell narcotics. The court also ordered the confiscation of all seized drugs and ruled that the accused will be deported after completing his prison term.
The verdict highlights the United Arab Emirates’ strict zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking and use, with authorities reiterating that even small quantities intended for sale attract severe punishment.
Intelligence tip leads to police operation
The case dates back to April, when the General Department of Anti-Narcotics received credible intelligence that an Asian man was in possession of illegal drugs and actively seeking buyers in a Dubai neighbourhood. Acting swiftly on the information, anti-narcotics officers set up a controlled operation, with police personnel posing as buyers to intercept the suspect during a planned transaction.
According to a police investigation officer, the accused was arrested red-handed while accepting Dh200 in exchange for narcotics. The arrest took place at the agreed meeting point, leaving the suspect with no opportunity to flee or destroy evidence.
Drugs seized and use confirmed
During the search, officers recovered three plastic packets containing a total of 24 grams of a white crystalline substance. Laboratory analysis later confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine, a prohibited narcotic under UAE law. Medical and forensic tests further revealed that the accused was also a user of illegal drugs.
During questioning, the man admitted to consuming narcotics and told investigators that he had purchased the drugs from another Asian dealer. However, he claimed he did not know the supplier’s identity. He also confessed that he intended to sell part of the drugs to another person, who later turned out to be an undercover police officer.
Court cites intent to distribute
After reviewing the evidence, witness testimony, and laboratory reports, the Dubai Criminal Court ruled that the accused’s actions constituted possession with intent to distribute. The court noted the quantity of drugs recovered, the financial transaction involved, and the defendant’s admission of use as aggravating factors.
In its judgment, the court ordered a life sentence, the confiscation of all seized narcotics, and mandatory deportation upon completion of the sentence, in line with UAE legal provisions applicable to foreign nationals convicted of serious drug offences.
Strong warning from authorities
Authorities said the case reflects the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations in curbing narcotics distribution and serves as a strong warning to those involved in drug-related activities. The General Department of Anti-Narcotics continues to conduct proactive surveillance and sting operations to protect public safety and uphold the law.
