Ex-girlfriend arrested after poisoning Easter egg kills young boy
A woman was arrested following the death of a 7-year-old boy who allegedly consumed a poisoned Easter egg sent to his family. Luís Fernando fell ill after eating the chocolate and was rushed to a hospital in Imperatriz, Maranhão, Brazil, on Thursday. Despite being intubated, he passed away just hours after arrival.
The authorities are looking into claims that the eggs were sent by the bitter ex-girlfriend of the mother’s new partner. Upon hearing of her son’s condition, Mirian Lira, the boy’s mother, began to show signs of poisoning, including purple hands and difficulty breathing. Both she and her 13-year-old daughter remain in critical condition, police stated.
The Easter egg arrived as a gift, wrapped and with a message: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.” The family was initially unsure of the sender’s identity. A woman’s voice on the phone simply asked if they had received the egg, saying, “You’ll find out who it is,” before abruptly hanging up.
Police arrested a 35-year-old woman who was caught on surveillance cameras purchasing the chocolate, disguised with a wig. They seized two wigs, chocolate remnants, medicines, and bus tickets. Investigations suggest jealousy and revenge as motives for the poisoning, as the woman is reportedly the ex-partner of one of the victims.
Samples of the eggs and blood from the family were sent for forensic analysis to identify the poison used.
