A much-loved ice cream and chocolate shop in Musselburgh has once again captured the festive imagination of the community with a Christmas window display inspired by Raymond Briggs’ classic tale The Snowman. The display at Elena Di Rollo on Bridge Street follows last year’s popular Home Alone theme, which drew admiration from passers-by and customers alike.

A Christmas classic brought to life

This year’s front-window transformation recreates scenes from the beloved 1978 picture book and its 1982 animated film adaptation, which tells the story of a young boy whose snowman magically comes to life and takes him on a journey to meet Santa Claus.

For shop manager Marianne Hills, the theme is deeply personal. “The Snowman is one of my favourite Christmas short films, and I felt it was time to bring it to life in our window,” she said. “I remember the excitement and buzz when it was first aired at Christmas in 1982. The music and illustrations were magical.”

Community reaction: ‘It has touched some hearts’

Owned by Marianne’s mother, Elaine, the family-run shop has long been known for its elaborate seasonal displays. Although this year’s window is “not as big and wild” as last year’s Home Alone scene, Marianne said the response has been overwhelmingly warm.

“Customer feedback has been pouring in,” she noted. “This one has obviously touched some hearts.”

Locals have been stopping to take photos and enjoy the nostalgic tribute, with many remarking on how the display evokes childhood memories of watching The Snowman during the festive season.

Looking ahead: An ‘80s spectacular for Easter 2026

Elena Di Rollo also uses its storefront to support community projects. Marianne revealed that the entire window will be handed over to Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association (MAMA) ahead of Easter 2026 to promote their upcoming production of The Wedding Singer.

“It’s going to be an ‘80s spectacular,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to working with them. The ideas are already flowing.”

The shop extended festive greetings to customers and residents: “We would also like to wish the community a very merry Christmas and New Year.”
