Karachi: Imran Khan‘s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) made a significant announcement on Friday night, revealing its decision to take up the role of opposition both at the Centre and in the Punjab province. This move comes as the nation continues its efforts to form the next government, as reported by Dawn.

The decision was communicated by PTI’s barrister, Ali Saif, following the party’s nomination of Umar Ayub Khan for the prime ministerial position and Aslam Iqbal for the role of chief minister in Punjab. Saif elaborated that this decision was made under the guidance of party founder Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated.

Saif emphasized the party’s commitment to opposition despite the belief that they might have secured a significant number of seats had the election results not been manipulated. He asserted, “We have the evidence that our candidates won,” as cited by PTI.

In the recently held elections on February 8, independent candidates, largely supported by PTI, clinched 93 out of 265 National Assembly seats. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif secured 75 seats, followed by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) with 54 seats.

In a significant development, both PML-N and PPP announced a post-election alliance on Tuesday. Additionally, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), with its 17 seats, has also agreed to support this coalition.
