Washington: Federal authorities announced on Wednesday that an Indian national, Jaspal Singh, aged 57, has passed away at a hospital in Atlanta while awaiting deportation due to his illegal entry into the United States.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informed the Indian Consulate in New York about Singh’s demise, and his next of kin have been duly notified.

Singh’s death occurred on April 15 at an Atlanta hospital. ICE has disclosed that an autopsy is forthcoming to ascertain the exact cause of his passing.

Originally entering the US legally on October 25, 1992, Singh faced a deportation order issued by an immigration judge on January 21, 1998. He later returned to India voluntarily at an unspecified date.

However, Singh was apprehended by US Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol officers on June 29, 2023, while attempting to reenter the US illegally via the US-Mexico border.

Following his arrest, Singh was placed under the custody of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Atlanta. He remained detained at a federal processing center in the city as his immigration proceedings continued.

In accordance with protocol, when a non-citizen passes away while in detention, ERO is mandated to notify Congress, relevant non-governmental organizations, and the media. Within two business days, a detailed news release is also posted on ERO’s public website containing pertinent information about the incident.
