Singapore: A man of Indian descent has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The incident involved the death of his girlfriend, Mallika Begum Rahamansa Abdul Rahman, on January 17, 2019. The defendant, M Krishnan, expressed distress over his girlfriend’s involvement with other men, leading to a violent altercation where he punched and kicked her.

The sentencing, reported by the “TODAY” newspaper, took place in the High Court. Krishnan’s plea was made last week, and his sentence was retroactively applied from the date of his arrest. During the proceedings, Justice Valerie Thean highlighted Krishnan’s prior offenses, including abuse towards both his wife and girlfriend, despite his claims of reform.

Acknowledging Krishnan’s intermittent explosive disorder and the role of alcohol in his actions, Justice Thean emphasized his awareness of his temperamental issues. Despite being diagnosed after the offense, Krishnan had a history of brushes with the law due to his temper.

The judge emphasized the gravity of Krishnan’s repeated domestic abuse and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Culpable homicide not amounting to murder carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, caning, or a 20-year jail term with a fine or caning.

The court heard that Krishnan’s abuse towards Mallika escalated following her admission of infidelity, which occurred while he was incarcerated in 2018. The abuse included physical assaults, such as kicking, slapping, and punching Mallika, resulting in injuries.

On January 15, 2019, during an altercation fueled by alcohol, Krishnan pushed Mallika, causing her to fall and hit her head. Subsequently, Mallika sought medical attention for her injuries, which included bruises and abrasions.

Throughout the ordeal, Krishnan continued to consume alcohol, and the situation worsened as they discussed Mallika’s relationship with another man over the phone with her sister.
