A tragic incident unfolded in South Vancouver, Canada, as 24-year-old student Chirag Antil from India was fatally shot inside a car, as confirmed by local authorities. The Vancouver Police released a statement disclosing that Antil was discovered deceased within a vehicle following reports from neighbors who heard gunshots.
The authorities were alerted to the scene at East 55th Avenue and Main Street around 11 pm on April 12, prompted by the sound of gunfire. Chirag Antil, aged 24, was found inside a vehicle in the vicinity. The investigation is ongoing, with no arrests made at this time, according to the police.
In response to the tragic incident, Varun Choudhary, the chief of the National Students’ Union of India’s Congress students’ wing, took to social media, urging the Ministry of External Affairs for intervention to support Antil’s family. “Urgent attention regarding the murder of Chirag Antil, an Indian student in Vancouver, Canada,” Choudhary emphasized, calling for close monitoring of the investigation to ensure prompt justice and requesting comprehensive assistance for the bereaved family.
Chirag Antil’s family is seeking assistance through a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to facilitate the repatriation of his body to India, as reported by local media outlets. Romit Antil, Chirag’s brother from Haryana, remembered him as a compassionate individual. “My brother and I shared a strong bond. We conversed every day, at all hours. Our last conversation occurred just before the tragic incident. He was content, devoid of any conflicts or altercations with anyone. He embodied kindness,” Romit Antil expressed to CityNews.
Chirag Antil arrived in Vancouver in September 2022 after completing his MBA at University Canada West and had recently acquired his work permit, indicating a promising future ahead.
