Tokyo: Japan has issued a tsunami alert for its entire western coastline following a significant 7.6 magnitude earthquake near the Noto Peninsula, approximately 300 km (190 miles) from Tokyo on Monday.
NHK, the public broadcaster, reported that a tsunami exceeding one meter has already impacted the town of Wajima. Authorities are cautioning residents about the potential for a tsunami as high as 5 meters (16 feet) in Ishikawa prefecture, urging those in affected areas to promptly move to higher ground and distance themselves from the coast.
Although the earthquake was strong enough to be felt in Tokyo, there are no immediate reports of damage. In response to the seismic activity, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority is actively assessing the status of the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company and the Shika nuclear plants managed by Hokuriku Electric Power Company.
