King Charles, monarch of the United Kingdom, has been confirmed by Buckingham Palace to have been diagnosed with cancer and is set to undergo immediate treatment.

Initially diagnosed with an enlarged prostate last month, the King underwent a medical procedure for the benign condition. However, during this intervention, another concern was noted and subsequently identified as a form of cancer. Buckingham Palace has stated that the King is now under the care of a specialist team for “appropriate treatment.”

After spending time at his Sandringham estate in Norfolk for recovery, King Charles returned to London today to commence outpatient treatment. The presence of the Royal Standard above Buckingham Palace signifies his residence. Despite the diagnosis, the King remains optimistic about his treatment.

It’s clarified by royal sources that the King’s cancer is not prostate cancer, but rather a separate condition that was discovered following his hospitalization for benign prostate enlargement. The timely identification of this secondary condition is credited to the intervention on his prostate, for which the King expresses gratitude to medical professionals.

However, palace sources stress that the King’s condition is atypical, and further details about his treatment plan have yet to be confirmed by doctors. The statement from Buckingham Palace emphasizes that despite his diagnosis, King Charles will continue to fulfill his State duties and official paperwork, albeit postponing public-facing duties as advised by his medical team.

The King’s decision to disclose his diagnosis aims to prevent speculation and foster understanding, particularly for those affected by cancer worldwide. It’s anticipated that King Charles will take a hiatus from royal duties, with no confirmed date for his return. Nevertheless, palace officials affirm his commitment to resuming his duties as soon as possible.

Due to his treatment schedule, the King is expected to miss significant events, such as the Commonwealth Day service. However, there are no plans to appoint Counsellors of State to assume his duties, with Queen Camilla continuing to support him while fulfilling her own public responsibilities.

The news of the King’s diagnosis has prompted support from various quarters, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who expressed well wishes for the monarch’s recovery. Meanwhile, Prince Harry is expected to travel to the UK to visit his father in the coming days, although Meghan Markle and their children will not accompany him.

This development comes amid a series of health concerns within the royal family, including Princess of Wales’ surgery and the Duchess of York’s cancer diagnosis. Despite these challenges, King Charles remains determined to confront his illness and looks forward to resuming his duties in due course.
