London: The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) has announced that it is giving its animal inmates their annual medical check-up over the course of the coming week.
With 19,000 animals of 560 species present in the zoo, most will be checked for height, weight, general health and well-being, from the tiniest ant to the tallest giraffe. Clusters or large groups may have only a small sample checked.
The zoo authorities have, however, admitted that getting a penguin on its way to lunch to step on a scale, or a lion to stretch out to its full height, is not the easiest thing to do. Getting them to cooperate is going to keep the authorities quite busy over the coming week.
Data collected in this study will be shared by the ZSL with zoos all over the world to facilitate better planning and care of the animals in their charge, TOI reports.
