Two bomb explosions rocked the Pakistani province of Balochistan, claiming the lives of at least 28 people and injuring many others on the eve of general elections, officials confirmed.

The initial blast, which occurred in Pishin district north of Quetta city, resulted in 16 fatalities. The second explosion, located in Qila Saifullah to the east, claimed 12 lives. Responsibility for both attacks was claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group.

The electoral atmosphere has been overshadowed by violence and allegations of electoral fraud. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, barred from candidacy due to what he alleges are politically motivated corruption charges, remains a significant figure in the political landscape despite his incarceration.

The IS claimed responsibility for both bombings, citing the use of motorbikes rigged with explosives. Balochistan, known for its resource wealth but also its socio-political strife, has a long history of violence, with various groups vying for autonomy. Islamist militant factions, including the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), are active in the region’s border areas with Afghanistan.

The explosion in Pishin targeted the office of an independent candidate, resulting in widespread damage to vehicles and structures, with 25 reported injuries. The second blast hit the election office of the JUI-F party in Qila Saifullah, injuring 20 individuals.

Despite the violence, the Balochistan government affirmed that the election would proceed as scheduled. Officials emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the democratic process against terrorist threats.

Balochistan, due to its geographical and strategic significance, plays a crucial role in Pakistan’s political landscape. However, many residents feel marginalized by mainstream political parties and express disillusionment with the electoral process.

As the election day approaches, concerns regarding the credibility of the vote persist, particularly with the sidelining of Imran Khan and his party, the PTI. Khan’s legal battles and disqualification from running for public office have raised questions about the fairness of the electoral process.

The PTI, despite its past electoral success, faces significant challenges, including the loss of its electoral symbol and the incarceration of its leaders. Nawaz Sharif, a three-time former Prime Minister, is positioned as a frontrunner in the election, signaling a potential return to power facilitated by a reported understanding with the military.

In the face of economic challenges and political uncertainties, a high voter turnout is anticipated, with voters prioritizing issues such as economic stability and accountability. The results, expected within 14 days of the election, will shape Pakistan’s political landscape in the coming years.
