Washington: A chemical tanker that was struck off the coast of India on Saturday was targeted by a “one-way attack drone fired from Iran,” according to a statement from the Pentagon. The attack occurred around 10 am local time and caused no casualties on the Japanese-owned vessel, named Chem Pluto.

The fire resulting from the strike has been extinguished, and the U.S. military is in communication with the vessel as it continues toward its destination in India.

The Chem Pluto, flying under a Liberian flag and operated by a Dutch entity, was attacked 200 nautical miles off the coast of India. The Pentagon confirmed that no U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity at the time of the incident. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, the drone strike occurred amid a series of drone and missile attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels on a crucial shipping lane in the Red Sea. The Huthis claim to be conducting these attacks in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

The Indian Navy responded to a request for assistance, dispatching an aircraft to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew. Additionally, an Indian Navy warship has been sent to provide further assistance as needed.
