Washington: US President Joe Biden expressed his dismay and condemnation following the reported death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. He stated that Navalny had courageously opposed corruption and violence within the Putin government and held Putin responsible for his death.
The White House is actively seeking more information regarding Navalny’s demise at a Russian penal colony in the Arctic Circle, where he had been sent less than two months prior. This event has further strained already tense relations between the US and Russia.
Navalny, aged 47, was a prominent critic of Putin, and Biden had previously warned of severe consequences for Putin if Navalny were harmed. The President continues to clash with Putin over various issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In response to Navalny’s death, Biden is urging US Congress, particularly Republican hardliners, to support increased funding for Ukraine’s military to counter Russian aggression.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris, attending a security conference in Munich, reaffirmed the US commitment to NATO and expressed condolences to Navalny’s wife, Yulia.
Biden’s reelection campaign released an advertisement targeting Trump for his stance on NATO, particularly aimed at voters in key swing states with ties to NATO countries bordering Russia.
