A 16-year-old student was allegedly the object of a Missouri schoolteacher’s sex on campus, and the teacher allegedly used other students as “lookouts” during the encounter.
Hailey Clifton- Carmack, a math teacher at Pulaski County’s Laquey High School, was reportedly arrested this week in Texas on felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child, statutory rape, having sex with a student, and child molestation.
$250,000 has been set as her bond while the authorities arrange for her extradition to Missouri.
Another student came forward to report the relationship, which is how officials first learned about it. The relationship-related student allegedly showed them pictures of scratches on his back, which he claimed were caused by his contacts with Ms. Clifton-Carmack.
The instructor was characterized by the student as being “too close with students”. Court records state that both the high school principal and the superintendent of Laquey Schools were aware of the teacher’s actions prior to them being brought to attention.
To search the teacher’s phone, authorities obtained a search warrant in December. The warrant was served by an officer who reported that Ms. Clifton-Carmack “handed over her phone with no issues and did not have the normal behaviour of someone facing the same accusations.”
The woman denied having improper relationships with students at the time.
Nevertheless, officials claimed that the teacher refused to provide them with her password on the advice of her lawyer when they received a warrant to search the contents of the device.
After breaking through the electronic security system, officials found a conversation between the student in question and Ms. Clifton-Carmack discussing their relationship.
The student’s father stated that the woman had visited his family’s house shortly before leaving for Texas to see them. According to court documents, he told a witness that the teacher had confirmed their sexual relationship and that other students had been used as “lookouts” while they were having sex in class.
“I may as well let it happen because they are going to do it behind my back,” he said to the witness.
The father allegedly added that if necessary, he would lie for his son. The Miami Herald reports that the father was taken into custody on January 3. On Monday, January 8, he was charged with first-degree child endangerment. He entered a not guilty plea.
In a statement to the outlet, the school district said, “The employee has not been in the district since 8 December 2023 and we do not anticipate her return.”
