US President Donald Trump clarified on Tuesday that he never quoted a specific tariff rate on countries engaging in trade with Russia. “I didn’t mention any percentage. But we’ll certainly be taking action. Let’s wait and see how things unfold soon,” he said during a press briefing.

This statement comes shortly after Trump criticized India for being Russia’s top energy customer and for purchasing arms from Moscow. Earlier, he had imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods and warned of stricter measures.

Responding to questions about whether he would follow through with a proposed 100% tariff on countries buying Russian oil and gas  a move that could affect India and China, Trump indicated that a decision would be made after an upcoming discussion. “We have a meeting scheduled with Russian officials on Wednesday. We’ll determine our course of action after that,” he stated.

India, which has maintained trade relations with Russia despite global pressures, had recently responded to Trump’s earlier threats by defending its sovereign right to purchase energy from any partner.

Trade negotiations between India and the US are ongoing despite tensions, with both sides hoping to find common ground. Meanwhile, Trump’s remarks have stirred concerns about the possibility of wider economic repercussions and rising trade barriers.

The global community is closely watching how these policy decisions could affect diplomatic ties and international commerce.
