The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an alert on Wednesday that several guests on a US cruise ship have inexplicably developed vomiting and diarrhea. As stated in the press release, since the Queen Victoria sailed from Florida on January 22, at least 123 passengers and 16 crew members have reported being sick. Health officials stated that vomiting and diarrhea were the most common symptoms among those on board the ship, but they did not know the cause of the gastrointestinal illness.
“Number of passengers who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of passengers onboard: 123 of 1,824 (6.74%),” the CDC said in the alert. “Number of crew who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of crew onboard: 16 of 967 (1.65%),” it added.
The Cunard Cruise Line ship “increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan” in response to the unexplained outbreak, the CDC said. The sick passengers and crew had also been isolated. The CDC also stated that the situation on board is being watched over by the health agency’s Vessel Sanitation Program.
“The gastrointestinal illness cases reported are totals for the entire voyage and do not represent the number of active (symptomatic) gastrointestinal cases at any given port of call or at disembarkation,” the health agency noted.
